A related
family tree 'Family History of Andrew & Heather Mooore'
This line can be traced back to about 1750 in Binley near Coventry where they
were mainly Yeoman farmers. Thomas Shettle of this line became Land Agent to the
noble Erle-Drax family at Charborough in Dorset, and through the marriage of his
daughter into the family became very wealthy.
How the
Shettle Family at Almer became wealthy.
Thomas Shettle 1794-1881, a Yeoman Farmer born at Stretton
on Dunsmore near Coventry, settled at Almer in Dorset about 1822 where his
children were baptized from 1823- 1832; his wife being Elizabeth BARRETT born in
London. At some point before 1851 he became the Land Agent for the extremely
wealthy ERLE-DRAX family at nearby Charborough House in the parish of Morden.
The Drax family had extensive estates in Warwickshire, so Thomas may have had
contacts before moving to Dorset. In 1827 the heiress to the Charborough estate,
Jane Frances ERLE-DRAX-GROSVENOR married John Samuel Wanley SAWBRIDGE of Wye in
Kent and John takes the name of ERLE-DRAX. They have two daughters but no male
heir. Meanwhile John’s brother Charles Sawbridge becomes the Rector of Almer
parish where in the 1851 census he is a bachelor aged 44. On 6 Jan 1859 at Cann,
Dorset he marries Elizabeth Mary SHETTLE, a daughter of Thomas born 1828, and on
5 Nov 1859 at Almer they have a son, Wanley who takes the name of
Sawbridge-Erle-Drax. He becomes a JP for Dorset and a Lieutenant in the Dorset
Yeomanry, and eventually inherits the extensive Sawbridge estate at Wye in Kent.
Presumably Thomas acquired considerable wealth from the marriage of his
daughter. His sons follow careers in the Law, the Clergy and the Civil Service.
The family assumes the Wyvern crest of the Drax family.
In
2010, the owner & occupant of Charborough House is Richard
Grosvenor Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax, MP for South Dorset. Elizabeth Mary had
three further sons who died in infancy, and she died in 1862 probably from
childbirth complications.

First Generation
1. William SHETTLE was born about 1730. He married (1) Elizabeth, and (2) Mary ELLIMAN on 20 July 1775 in
Wyken, Warwicks. These Shettles were prosperous Yeoman Farmers. Could William have come from Hampstead
Marshall in Berks where the Craven family also owned lands? He was of Combe Fields near Combe Abbey at his second

Elizabeth died before 1775. She and William SHETTLE had the following children:

4. Charles SHETTLE, son of William SHETTLE and Elizabeth, was born in 1758 (estimated) in Binley. He was baptised
on 5 January 1758 in Binley. He was an Independent Means. He married Frances SHAKSPEAR on 18 August 1789 in
Stretton-on-Dunsmore, Warwicks. He married Mary PHILLIPS on 6 December 1821 in Stretton-on-Dunsmore. He
died Q1 1848 in Coventry, Warwicks. (Stretton is on A45 S of Coventry & near
Binley.)
Frances SHAKSPEAR was born in 1760 (approx.). She died before 1821. She and Charles SHETTLE had the

August 1790 in Wolston, Warwicks.1 He died on 28 August 1843 in Binley.

married Elizabeth BARRETT in 1822 in Warks. He died Q3 1881 in Reading RD.
No Will found. Settled in Almer, Dorset about 1822. Age in Death Index given as 87 which agrees with birth year. He
was a prosperous Yeoman Farmer in Warwicks. until he settled in Almer, Dorset as Land Agent to the Sawbridge-Erle-
Drax family of Charborough who also had estates in Warcs.

21. George SHETTLE, son of William SHETTLE and Catharine MUSTON, was born on 22 April 1807 in Napton on the

son of ? SAWBRIDGE ( -1851), was born in 1807 in Olantigh near Wye, Kent. He was Rector of Almer. Rector of
Almer in Dorset. Their son Wanley Ellis Sawbridge-Erle-Drax, JP inherited the Charborough estate through his uncle
with hereditary rights to bear Arms. The Shettles of Warwicks & Dorset used the Wyvern as a crest, but no coat of arms
has been registered.
