Extracts from the 1901 Census for England and Wales

The 1901 census returns were released on 2 January 2002, and in a unique project by the then Public Record Office (now The National Archives- TNA) , were put on the Internet where they can be searched for named individuals, and images of the census pages can also be downloaded for a small charge.

Using the free Person Search facility, I have downloaded details of all those with the surnames SHERWOOD (4,896), SHEARWOOD 165) and SHARWOOD (151) plus a few of the less common spellings. I then used the freeware program Get1901Census (which can be downloaded from GENUKI >Census Software) to sort the records by PersonID into approximate family groups, and calculate a census reference RG13/Piece/Folio which enables one to look up a family in the microfiche census returns at your nearest repository without the need to purchase an image of the returns online. The calculated folio number is not always exact, but will land you within a few pages of the desired reference.

You can download a tab delimited text file (.txt) for each surname variant by clicking on the links below. These files are designed to be opened in a spreadsheet or database, but can also be opened in a word processor if you do not have either. Each record contains forename, surname, age, where born, Administrative County (e.g.. London, Kent, Southampton, Borough of Hull - note that spellings have not been standardized), Civil Parish, Occupation, Piece and Folio. On comparing these records with the original returns, you may find errors in transcribing names, places or occupations. If so, please report them to the TNA Contact page so that their database may be corrected.

If you download any images of census pages of Sherwoods, I would be most grateful if you can send me a copy by E-mail for the group's archives.
