EDITORIAL
Since our June issue the terrible events of September the 11th in America and its aftermath have touched the lives of thousands of families across the world, and we send our deepest sympathy to all those affected by loss of loved ones or friends. On that day our US correspondent, Geoff Sherwood, who used to work at The World Trade Center, was walking to work on Wall Street when the planes hit the towers. He sent me an e-mail the following day with a graphic account of the terrible consequences in which he lost a number of friends. Fortunately he and his family are safe, and we send him our best wishes.
On a happier note, my main news is that I became a grandfather on 15 September, our daughter Annette having a lovely baby boy, Thomas William Sherwood Pickford. In November, Tammy & I made our first visit to Australia, visiting Margaret & John Love in Perth as well as some of my Sherwood second cousins who settled in Sydney in 1912. It was a memorable experience for both of us, and we found the people so friendly. One of my New Year resolutions is to update our website, and include extracts of births, marriages & deaths in the UK GRO Indexes from 1837, so if you have extracts which you have not sent me, please do send them. If you have access to a set of the indexes & would like to help with further extraction, please let me know. Some free extracts up to 1901can be found on the Rootsweb site http://freebmd.rootsweb.com .
We still have a vacancy for the post of Newsletter Editor, so until that post can be filled I have reluctantly decided due to my own workload to  produce just one newsletter a year in November. I am willing to send this out free to those on e-mail, but for those who want a printed copy there will be a reduced subscription of £1.50 in the UK, or US$5 or A$10 to cover cost of printing and postage. Please return the attached subscription renewal form so that I can update my records. I am short of articles and cuttings for future issues, so please do consider sending me something on your researches or just news of your family. I positively thrive on articles of between 10 and a 1,000 words, along with illustrations or photos.
By the time you read this the long-awaited 1901 Census for England & Wales will have been released and online at http://census.pro.gov.uk . There is a free index, but the cost of downloading pages relating to over four thousand Sherwoods will be beyond my resources, so please send me details of any transcripts or pages which you do download so that I can add them to the group database.
Regarding our next Sherwood Gathering in 2003, I am talking to Bob Trott of the Trott ONRG about a possible date and venue. It will definitely be held at Guildford in Surrey which is convenient for London & Heathrow Airport, and will probably be in September. Please put this date in your diary & let me know if you hope to attend.
My best wishes to you all for a happy & peaceful New Year.

We welcome the following new members:
No.052. Mrs Lynette Hill, 14 Sinclair St, Christchurch, New Zealand. E-mail: thehillfamily@xtra.co.nz Her interests are Brinkworth, Wilts from 1800 and Bristol. Robert Sherwood m. Susannah FRY Also Thomas to Ann Whale 1835. (Ed: It seems they go back to at least 1790 in Brinkworth. The earliest entries for that area on the IGI are at Chippenham ca1540 which could be the common origin for the
Sherston Sherwoods as well).

053. Mrs Mary Sherwood, 9 The Paddock, York YO26 6AW writes that she has been researching her late husbands Sherwood line in Yorkshire since 1974, and has therefore amassed a lot of data which may be useful to our group. She has traced them back to 1669 in the small village of Leake in the N Riding, and is 'pretty certain' they came from Co.Durham & before that Northumberland. The line is Christopheri > John 1672 >John 1707 Danby wiske > Thomas > 1747 D W >Thomas  1778 Skeffling> John 1810 S.Frodingham > Christopher 1844 Hollym > Allison 1874 Grafton > Herbert 1920 Grafton (her late husband). Mary has sent me a very useful list of Yorkshire Will extracts.

054. Mrs Enid Everett, 6 Percy St, Fawkner, VIC 3060, Australia E-mail: michenid@rpg.com.au seeks any information in the Thornton & Pickering area of Yorkshire on Robert Sherwood who married Jane GRAYSON. They had a daughter Jane born 8 Oct 1840 who married David HARDWICK in 1861 and arrived in Melbourne 16 July 1861. Jane had a brother Henry Sherwood who also settled in Kyneton, Victoria in 1864.

055. Mr Gilbert A Toon, 410 Grasmere Ave, Interlaken, NJ 07712, USA E-mail gibt@worldnet.att.net  who has traced back to a Thomas & Elizabeth Sherwood both born ca1865 somewhere in England. Thomas possibly came from Blackburn or Eccleston in Lancs. The family emigrated to the US in 1905 & lived at Freehold NJ, home residence in UK given as Mile End.

Ron Sherwood from Brisbane, Australia E-mail rondensher@yahoo.com and his cousin Lorraine Edwards have also said they will join our group. They are believed to be descended from a Peter Sherwood, builder of Lambeth in London ca1810 so probably distantly related to Margaret Love.

New address for Mark Sherwood: 2 Chantry Mews, Hatch Warren, Basingstoke, Hant. RG22 4UE
There is a lot of new material & other Sherwood enquiries on his website www.sherwood.org.uk

In the last issue the death of Harold Booty was announced, based on information from a member. Well I am pleased to say that Harold is still very much with us, although he has had to go into a nursing home. Typically he wrote to me with yet more Sherwood data from one of the many societies, Cambridgeshire Record Society, he belongs to. He says he is now 79 and well looked-after. If anyone wishes to contact him his new address is Fairview Nursing Home, 192 Park Rd, Peterborough PE1 2UF.

FROM THE MAIL BAG
Member Stella Cica writes that she has obtained the birth certificate of her grandmother, Rose Sherwood which shows that her mother's maden name was Mary Hannah POTTER. Phil has found the marriage on the IGI: John Sherwood to Mary Hannah Potter 25 Dec 1861 at Old Alresford, Hants.

Jenny Jorgensen asks if "anyone has info on Sherwoods in Poringland, Norfolk? In 1841 census Great or East Poringland Henstead Norfolk: Thomas Sherwood 55 ag lab, Sarah wife 55,Charlotte 20,Jeremiah 15 , James 15, Mary (mine I am pretty sure)13, Thomas 9.I have info that says Thomas Sherwood snr was born Yelverton Nfk. Sarah wife born Upton Nfk".

Mr. Pat Sherwood pshewood@aol.com of 3911 Lemon Tree, Houston, Texas 77088 is tracing his Sherwood line who emigrated from Faversham, Kent in 1814 to America.

Dr John Reed  says in an e-mail drjohnreed@excite.co.uk "My wife's ancestor John Allin of East Hendred in Berks(died 1653)married Anne Sherwood and their children John, Mary, Anne, Ellen and Jane were all born in EH. Anne was named in a brief of 30 May 1663 as a 'widow -- and one of the
sufferers by a fire there  26 June preceding.' I have so far failed to find the marriage of John and Anne.
There is extensive data on these Sherwoods in East Hendred, A Berkshire parish by A L Humphreys hatchards, London 1923 and in Parochial Topography of the Hundred of Wanting by W N Clarke Oxford 1824.  I can provide photcopies of these if you want them." John's address is in the BIG-R.

Allyson Luders alscraft@ozemail.com.au writes "I have come to a stop on the family tree on the sherwood side.  I have a site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ludersskeenfamilytree/ with some 8000 names - not all Sherwood, and would like to be included in your links and to supply you with the info I have.  My family came from Fowlmere in Cambridshire."

Barbara Sugarman writes b.sugarman@tinyworld.co.uk : "My name was Sherwood before I married, my Father was Sidney Sherwood born Cardiff 20/11/1886,my Grandfather was Thomas Llewellyn Sherwood born 25/08/1867 at Cowbridge Glamorgan , his Father was Ralph Barak Sherwood born
either in Avening or Woodchester Gloucestershire around 1841, the Census for 1851 gives his age as 10 years, but I have a record of a Christening for him at Woodchester Parish Church dated 28/10/1849 , this came from the Web Site of the "Mormon" Church it gives his Mothers name as Keziah but no Fathers name, no age is given for him. On the 1881 Census he is given as living with
Thomas Sherwood age 52 and Ann Sherwood age 55 at Woodchester, Thomas's occupation given as Victualler. He does not appear on the 1881 Census anywhere and neither does my Grandfather Thomas but I know that they were both alive as my Great Grandmother (Ralph's wife Elizabeth)was living in Cowbridge and gave her status on the Census as a married Woman with a 5year
Daughter Ann who was born in Whitechapel, Ralph died in 1890, at that time he was living with his son Thomas (my Grandfather) in Cardiff. What I am trying to find out is where exactly Ralph was born. (Ed: I have found the GRO birth entry 1840/2qtr for Barak Sherwood, the mother was Keziah Sherwood).

Ann Barratt annendekb@hotmail.com has interests in Peopleton in Worcestershire & sent me a copy of her tree in Excel. She writes "Kate Sherwood was my Great Grandmother, she married John Phillips; their children Owen Sherwood, Elizabeth Matilda, and Gwendolin Margaret (Known as Bonnie). Elizabeth being my Grandmother, she married Arthur Ernest Turner, had 2 sons, Owen James (my Dad) and John Sherwood. We all lived in and around Worcester, at one point I lived in Bredon, moving to Kempsey then on to Birmingham. Dad was born in Kent as his mother was a headmistress there, but they were brought up in the Spetchley / Bredicot area of Worcester, where my grandmother had a little village school."

Mark A Sherwood MASflteng@aol.com writes "My Great Grandfather, Hubert Sherwood, raised a family in the BWI of Jamaica.  I believe he was also born in Jamaica, but I am not sure. I would ike to know what records to research for English colonies, such as Jamaica?" (Can anyone help?)

Dana Prewett 748 N. Jefferon, Sarasota, Fla 43237. E-mail: DanaPrewitt@webtv.net says she is related to millionaire James Blair Sherwood mentioned in previous issues! She adds about her line "Since I am fairly new at this and 80 years old,  I sent your newsletter on to my son Jim in Albuquerque and to my nephew in Australia, can do better.  We were never able to get in touch with James Sherwood. I did write today to the address that you had written on the paper. With all his wealth he may have forgot his Kentucky relatives.  His Aunt and Father were closer to Ed in Australia. James grandfatherand my mother were first cousins.  We all lived in the Ewing, Ky community. James Grandfather and great Grandfather were depot agents on the same L& N Railroad. We had traced our ancestors back to England   My Gr GR Grandfather John was a son of a Francis Sherwood, we have a missing generation in there Think Hugh was connected.  There were so many Francis and Hugh 's.  Our people first settled in Maryland and came down the Ohio river to Maysville, Ky ( was called Liimestone ) at the time. A cousin has a cupboard and another a desk the Sherwoods
brought to KY with them." (Ed: perhaps Geoff can link these to the Maryland line?)

Michael Smith, who lives at Sutton Poyntz near Phil in Weymouth is a first cousin of member Derek Sinclair of the Pirbright, Surrey line. Their grandfather was John Sherwood.

John Lodder of Bridport in Dorset john@pandamole.fsnet.co.uk is distantly related to the eminent Genealogist, Geo Tudor Sherwood of SoG fame. Barbara Sherwood dtr. of George Sherwood the founder of the Soc. Gen. (Society of genealogists, NOT the Societe Generale the French bank!) She died some 30 years ago.  How I wish I had got to know him better when alive and that I then had my current obsession for genealogy, but probably many of us have the same  regret.  I have a copy of Geo. Sherwood's family tree which I will send you if you are interested  also a poem of his about family history. "

John Clarke e-mail: john@clarky34.freeserve.co.uk writes "I have a John Shearwood who married Dinah Faulding on 8th or 12th January 1779 in Wootton, Lincolnshire - these I have confirmed as my 5th great grandparents. I am trying to find evidence that he was the son of William Shearwood and Ann Marris who were married 25th June 1749 in Wootton. I have a parish record of a John son of Wm. Sheawood being baptized on 13th July 1750 in Cadney. William appears to have moved to Cadney as there are 7 other children baptized there with parents given as William and Ann Shearwood. Do you have any information about a William and Ann Shearwood of either Wooton or Cadney, Lincolnshire?"

I was not in the field with the hay - I had some hay & bought it off a person that sells hay." (Phil says this could be one of his ancestors!)
1762 Lenham, Kent in the Overseers of the Poor Accounts, John Sharwood was paid 2/6d. for a Quire of Blank Removing Orders ( looks as if John printed them, a thriving business in those days of many Settlement & Removal documents!).

A FRAUDULENT PEDIGREE. Some time ago we published an article about Mrs Mary Sherwood nee BUTT, the noted Victorian author of children's books. Well, while surfing Phil found this in The Gentlemans Magazine for 15 June 1867 p.421 "... should another edition (of her autobiography) be contemplated, it would also be desirable to omit the pedigree or give a corrected one. The first 6 generations are false, and doubtless were the imposition of one SPENCE a Schoolmaster it was said at Congleton(Cheshire). The link to connect Mrs Sherwood's family with Butts of Shouldham Thorpe was also supplied by Mr Spence. Leonard Butts who sold Thorpe & settled in Bromley, Kent died without issue, and a Leonard Butts, Knight given as his son had no existence!"

RIOT WITH RADIO SHERWOOD? Alan Wootton sent the following interesting extract from the Sunday Times dated 22 July 2001 following the riots at the G8 meeting at Genoa. The article was headed the "The [6] Groups behind the protest".  Most of them had the kind of names you might expect e.g. "Genoa Social Forum", "Global Resistance" or "Ya Basta!" [enough] but one was called "Radio Sherwood".  The relevant para, below a little logo, says:" Radio Sherwood is close to "Ya Basta!".  Italian-based Radio Sherwood and its many offshoots, including the Sherwood Communications Agency, which has handled much of the internet publicity and newsgathering in Genoa, including lie radio broadcasts." (Ed: does anyone know of this agency or has listened to the station??)

SURNAMES, GENES & GENEALOGY. This was the title of a very interesting series of talks on BBC Radio4 this Summer, in which a friend of mine, Tony Pomeroy described the results of DNA testing on members of his one-name study. The testing was carried out by Prof. Brian Sykes of Oxford University http://www.oxfordancestors.com/ on 51 apparently unrelated bearers of the West Country surname Pomeroy, Pomery etc. Family tradition had it that all Pomerys descend from a Ralf de Pommerai who came over with the Conqueror & settled in Devon. Only one of those tested, a Viscount Harberton can definitely trace his line back to Ralf, The tests showed that possibly 3 others were descended from that line, the remainder definitely were not, but could be fitted into one of seven distinct ancestral groups.
The GENUKI site on DNA testing has this to say: "The best general introduction to the science of DNA testing is an article by Neil Bradman and Mark Thomas of The Centre for Genetic Anthropology at University College London (UCL) entitled The Y Chromosome In The Study Of Human Evolution, Migration And Prehistory. This explains the basic terminology that you'll meet when reading about genetics & DNA testing and some of its relevance for family historians. There are two basic DNA tests being offered to family historians: the Y-chromosome test and the mitochondrial test. The Y-chromosome in the nuclear DNA of every living man resembles that of his father and his paternal grandfather, and is carried by male cousins of any degree that share the same male ancestor. Testing two different parts of the Y-chromosome reveals the testee's haplogroup, one of 28 shared by all humans on the planet, and their haplotype, which reveals their own DNA signature. Together they distinguish one male-to-male lineage from another. The mitochondrial test looks at the mitochondria, a special part of nearly all human cells, which is passed on female-to-child and inherited down the female line. It is generally used to study long-term population developments such as migrations and has no real use for family historians. The Y-chromosome test can only be taken by men while the mitochondrial test can be taken by both men and women.
What the tests can show:The tests can be applied to link specific individuals, or to build up the picture of the ancestry of people sharing the same name, or to map the genetic orgins of large segments of the population. For family historians, results from groups sharing the same surname have yielded the most interesting results.
The Y-chromosome test (the Y-test) can indicate:
whether specific individual men share a common male ancestor
if a set of men with the same or similar surname are directly related through a common ancestor.
how many different common male ancestors any given group collectively shares.
to which broad haplogroup each individual male belongs to (for example, over half of all Europeans belong to one of two major haplogroups of 28 known worldwide).
an analysis of the mutations in the Y-chromosome can also be used to estimate the degree of separation between individual males in terms of the number of generations since the separation occurred. That man is often referred to as the 'most recent comon ancestor' (MRCA). There is currently a debate over the 'natural' rate of mutation over time.
The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) test: reveals details about the distant origins of maternal ancestors.
can be used to link individuals via the direct female line (i.e. mother-to-mother).
DNA testing and the convergence of genetics & genealogy are being touted as the next big thing to revolutionise family history. While a fully-fledged "genetic genealogy" future is still some way off, current tests by one-name groups in the UK and the USA are already revealing valuable and challenging results. "
(If any male members of our Sherwood group would like to join in a similar project, please let Phil know. The DNA test is quick & painless, just requiring a swab sample from inside the mouth, and the results are completely confidential. I doubt that all Sherwoods are related, but such a study could help to place people into a number of genetic lines.)

A REASON FOR REMARRIAGE
The following is taken from an article published in Family Tree Magazine, August 2001 by Michael J Wood:
How, but for this affidavit, or by searching the Assize files, might a descendant discover that an ancestor, nee Symons, a child of William and Agnes Symons of the Isle of Wight, was the son of a couple who married in Liverpool in the names of Sherwood and Penn, and that the man's father's correct name was not Nathaniel Sherwood, a coach master, but Nicholas Symons, heir to great estates in Cornwall and Devon?
Faculty Office, 1821: Lambeth Palace Library, FM1/172, pp 296-297.19 October 1821
Appeared personally William Symons of Ryde in the Parish of Newchurch in the Isle of Wight and County of Southampton Gentleman and made Oath that on the fourteenth day of September in the Year One Thousand eight hundred and six, he the Deponent being then a Bachelor resident at Liverpool in the County of Lancaster and known only by the Name of William Sherwood.from the time of his Birth, was married by Licence by the said name of William Sherwood to Agnes Penn, then of Liverpool, Spinster in the Parish Church of Saint Nicholas in the said Town of Liverpool by The Reverend Lewis Pughe, Clerk, a Priest or Minister in Holy Orders of the Church of England, and ever since the Solemnization of the said Marriage, he the Deponent and his said Wife have always passed and been known by the names of William Sherwood and Agnes Sherwood, the Deponent always supposed that the said Name of Sherwood was the true and proper Sirname of his Father and of himself till lately,.for he.further deposeth and saith that his this Deponent's said Father for many years previous and down to the time of his death (which happened on the fourth day of July in the Year One Thousand eight hundred and two, when he was drowned in crossing the Liverpool River on his way to Chester Fair) carried on the Business of a Coach Master in Liverpool aforesaid, where he passed and was always called and known by the Christian and Sirnames of Nathaniel Sherwood and by no other Name, and in and by those Names (to wit) in the Year One Thousand seven hundred and eighty five he married Sarah Roberts this Deponent's Mother and the several Children Issue of this Marriage were all called and known by the said Sirname of Sherwood, And the Deponent further made Oath that he always understood and verify believes that his said Father never disclosed to his Wife (the Mother of this Deponent) nor to any of his Family, who his Relations were, or where they or any of them lived, and that they never knew or suspected or had any reason whatever to suspect that Nathaniel Sherwood were not his real and true Christian and Sirnames, till after the Death of his Widow this Deponent's said mother which happened in the Year One Thousand eight hundred and seventeen, After which event, that is to say, some time in or about the Year One Thousand eighthundred and eighteen, Upon looking over the Papers kept in a Family Chest belonging to the Deponent's said Father and subsequently to his said Widow, several Papers and Documents belonging to the Deponent's said Father were found therein, which first led to an Inquiry whether the Deponent's said Father's real Names were not in fact Nicholas Symons, and not Nathaniel Sherwood, which said Enquiry ended by ascertaining beyond all doubt that the Deponent's said Father was the second Son of William Symons of Hatt in the County of Cornwall, Esquire, and Elizabeth Symons his Wife (both long since deceased), that his real and true Christian and Sirnames were Nicholas Symons and not Nathaniel Sherwood, And that he was Tenant in Tail under the Will of his father the said William Symons, Esquire, deceased, And that he this Deponent as the eldest son of the said Nicholas Symons was intitied as Heir at Law and Devisee in Tail to very valuable Estates in the Counties of Cornwall and Devon, and an Ejectment having been tried at the last Assizes held for the said County of Cornwall, it was proved beyond all possibility of doubt, and was established by the Verdict of the Jury duly impannelled and sworn to try and said Ejectment, for the Lessor of the Plaintiff, that this Deponent's said Father's real and true Christian and Sirnames were Nicholas Symons, and that he this Deponent as his eldest son and Heir at Law is Tenant in Tail to certain large Estates in the said Counties of Cornwall and Devon, And the Deponent further made Oath that it having been suggested that under the circumstances hereinbefore setforth, doubts may arise whether he this Deponent should not have been married by the Name of William Symons especially as it has been now established by a Verdict at Law that his Father's real and true Christian and Sir- names were Nicholas Symons and not Nathaniel Sherwood, He this Deponent therefore to obviate all doubts as to the Validity of his Marriage And all Questions of title which might otherwise hereafter arise in regard to the said real Estates to which he the Deponent is now Tenant in Tail as aforesaid, is desirous of being married again to the said Agnes Symons otherwise Sher wood formerly Penn, And he further made Oath that he this Deponent and the said Agnes Symons formerly Agnes Penn are respectively above Twenty five Years of Age and are both of the Parish of Newchurch aforesaid and that he knoweth of no lawful Impediment by reason of any precontract (save to each other as aforesaid by reason of their aforesaid Marriage), Consanguinity, Affinity or any other lawful Cause to hinder the said intended Marriage, And he prayed a Licence to solemnize the same in the Parish Church of Newchurch aforesaid, And he lastly made Oath that the usual Place of abode of him the Appearer hath been in the said Parish of Newchurch for the space of four Weeks last past.
19th October 1821. [William Symons] The said William Symons was duly sworn to the Truth of this Affidavit, Before me, J Haggard, Surrogate.

Sherwood Distribution in the British 1881 Census
Sherwood Distn in 1881 census

The Guild of One-Name Studies of which Phil is a member has just published a book 'Distribution of Surnames in the 1881 British Census' compiled by Geoff Riggs (Price £15-see website above). Phil extracted all instances of Sherwood, Sharwood, Shearwood and Sheerwood, and the resulting distribution density is shown in this map from the book. The density values for each county were calculated as the ratio of number in county to population of county divided by the ratio of total number to population of Britain in 1881. Thus if the occurence is average the density is 1.0 The density varied from zero for some counties eg. Cornwall to 5 for Berkshire. The total number for all variants was 4,085 of whom  58 were Sharwood,  158 Shearwood and  17 Sheerwood. Sharwood mainly occurred in Kent, London & Northampton. I did not included Sher(r)ard and Sharrard which has a different origin and distribution, although doubtless some Sherwoods were enumerated under these names. Statistics for the highest density counties were:
                    Density       %   Number in Cty
Berkshire               5.0        3.6            149
Worcesters.           3.3        4.2            171
Oxfords.                3.0        1.8            74
Radnors.                2.8        0.2            9
Dorset                  2.7        1.7            71
Northants             2.4        2.2            91
Shrops.                2.3        1.9            79
Norfolk                 2.3        3.4            139
Kent                    2.1        4.8            196

London had the highest number 647 closely followed by Yorkshire with 616, but because of their high population the density was only 1.2 and 1.6 respectively. The main conclusion is that our surname was (and still is according to phone books) clustered in the Home Counties around London, with other large clusters in Yorks, Norfolk and Worcs. This distribution is in broad agreement with those found in the GRO indexes from 1837 and the IGI. Certainly the Sherwoods do not appear to have spread out from Nottingham Forest! Like other toponymic surnames such as Wood, our surname probably sprung up independently in several different places. (Scir-wood, dweller in the bright wood or shire wood).

Sherwoods in the US 1880 Census on CD
Recently I had the opportunity to search the LDS indexes of the 1880 census for the USA on CD-ROM. As for the British 1881 Census, families can be displayed in as-enumated order, but in addition it is possible to search by Gender and Race (White, Black, Mulatto, Asian or Native American). I was amazed to find 8,545 Sherwoods (over twice as many as in the British 1881 census) of which 182 were of Black race, 39 Mulatto, and 3 Native American Indians in Washington & California. 154 gave birthplace as England of whom 81 were male, 73 were born in Ireland and 16 in Scotland. Most (3,402) lived in the Atlantic States Region, followed by 806 in New England & 433 in the Cumberland Region. 473 lived in New York City, 1,834 in upstate NY, 123 in NJ, 54 in Delaware, 582 in CT(where the earliest Sherwoods settled in 1634), 118 in MA and 170 in Texas. Presumably most of the Sherwoods of black race were ex-slaves who took their name from their owners?
I have a Word or Excel file containing all Sherwoods listed in the National Index if anyone would like a copy. These CDs are definitely a 'must have' for American Sherwoods.
