The surname IMBER is relatively rare in England, being mainly found in early records in Wiltshire and London, where it is also recorded as EMBER, IMBRE etc., and is most likely derived from place names in Wilts or Surrey. In Yiddish the word also means 'ginger' and was taken by a number of Jewish families originating in Galicia in the Ukraine which have spread across Europe and America. A Naphtali Imber composed the Israeli National Anthem. Thus the surname is unusual in having at least two different origins. Left is a coat of arms granted to an unknown Imber family in Germany.  More on the surname & history.

Ancestry.com gives the following meanings of the surname:

English: habitational name from either of two places, one in Surrey, the other in Wiltshire. The former is named in Old English as ‘Imma’s enclosure’ (see Worth); the latter as ‘Imma’s lake’ (from mere ‘lake’, ‘pond’).
Jewish (Ashkenazic): variant of Ingber, from Yiddish imber ‘ginger’.
German: nickname for an industrious person or metonymic occupational name for a beekeeper, from Middle High German imbe, imme ‘bee’.

IMBER was the maiden name of my wife's mother, Edna Jane born 14 Feb 1907 in Northampton where her father Charles was serving with the 2nd Bn. of the Dorset Regiment as an Army Tailor. With the aid of some cousins, I have traced the Imber line back to about 1550 in parishes around the now-deserted village of Imber on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. It is therefore very likely that the family took their name from the village. They lived originally in the parishes of Chitterne and Sherrington near Warminster, later settling in Sutton Veny. About 1745 my wife's ancestor Thomas Imber, an Edgetoolmaker, moved to Shaftesbury in Dorset where some of the family remain to the present day. A John Imber of Tilshead became Vicar of Christchurch, Hampshire before the English Civil War and was evicted from his living for being a Royalist when the Roundheads captured the town. His descendants were wealthy merchants in Winchester, including a Matthew Imber who became Lord Mayor.

The Deserted Village of Imber in Wiltshire

'Imber village on the down,
Seven miles from any town.'

The church of St. Giles shown above (courtesy of Michael Daniel) has stood over Imber, seven miles West of Warminster, for nearly 700 years, and this well known local verse neatly describes the splendid rural isolation once enjoyed by this small Wiltshire community. But isolation can have its disadvantages, and the circumstances which led to the village being separated from its own people in 1943 still arouses strong emotions & a sense of outrage that refuses to go away. Salisbury Plain, the largest chalk grassland in Europe, was densely populated in Prehistoric times, but Imber thanks to its isolation even survived the Black Death which decimated surrounding villages in 1348. However, its total dependence on farming left left it vulnerable to the agricultural depression of the late 1800s. Having peaked at 440 in 1851, its population slowly migrated, and the arrival of the Army ranges in 1897 provided many with alternative employment. By 1932 all of the farms & most of the houses were owned by the War Office, and on the outbreak of war in 1939, it was only a matter of time before a decision was taken to evacuate villagers 'for their own safety'. On 1 November 1943, the 135 residents were summoned to the local school to be told they had just 47 days to leave. After the war, promises that they could return were broken, and many properties were damaged by artillery fire & fell into decay, so that now only the shell of the Manor House - Imber Court and the church still stand, surrounded by breeze-block buildings used for training in urban warfare. A service is held in the church once a year on the Patronal festival in September, but otherwise it is usually out of bounds to the public. To drive to the village past the wrecks of burnt-out military vehicles used for target practice is one of the most depressing experiences that I have had.

We now live in the neighbouring village of Bergisch Neukirchen called Pattscheid which is situated in an agricultural and fruit growing area. Pattscheid was first noted around the year 1000 as having its roots on the very street we live on, called Am Brungen. This means there was a spring which once stood on the spot and this is where the first inhabitants settled. We have two children born in Cologne who both attended primary school at Bergisch Neukirchen and then both went to High School in the next town, called Opladen.
Andrew has finished an apprenticeship and is now a Business Specialist for Industrial Production and Sales and is interested in visiting Australia again. Anna, his sister, is an outdoors person and has just about completed an apprenticeship as a Landscape Gardener. Andrew is very musical and both children are good at winter sports.
